Introduction

Hello! I am Dr. Chayoung Kang, Director of Noselab Rhinoplasty Clinic.

Today we will discuss the meaning of “natural” in rhinoplasty. Some patients’ noses may not look bad, but they look obviously operated. This case is about correcting an overly artificial-looking nose with no-implant rhinoplasty, to achieve a softer, natural appearance.

Preoperative Design for No-implant Rhinoplasty

  • High starting point

  • Nose bridge line is too defined

  • Obvious implant

  • Pointy nose tip

  • Long and asymmetrical nostrils

  • Eyes look too far apart

This is the patient’s concerns expressed during the preoperative design consultation. Everything was accurate. She wanted to improve the excessively artificial appearance.

Surgical plan

  • Removing the prosthesis from the nasal bridge and lowering the starting point (no implant).

  • Slightly reducing the height of the nose tip, in a way that it also reduces the height of the nostrils.

  • We decided to make the narrow-looking parts of the bridge as smooth as possible.

  • Correcting the columella angle to be softer.

  • We plan to improve the parts that look long and lower the overall height.

Before vs After Surgery

Let’s compare the before and after surgery changes.

The starting point of the glabella was lowered to look natural, and the awkward angle of the columella disappeared. The lenghty appearance of the nose also improved.

Overall, the nose looks smaller.

The shape of the prosthesis that was overly defined has become considerably softer, and the starting point was lowered and the shadows cast near the forehead have become less harsh.

The nostrils that were long and the columella that was tilted to the right side have improved a lot.

“Fancy nose” vs “natural nose”

This is a frequent concern during surgery. Especially, since “fancy” or “natural” noses are sensitive to trends. As time goes by and fancy noses are out of style, natural noses are trendy, and the opposite nose shape becomes popular again with time.

However, after performing many rhinoplasty surgeries, there are people who fit a “fancy” nose well, and those who do not fit well with it. Surgery is performed according to the direction of the patients’ satisfaction, but a nose shape that does not fit the person well does not seem to last long. It is unfortunate that some people too need to get a revision to get a nose that does not have any problems.

Therefore, it is good to choose a nose shape that one likes, however, it is important to consult with an specialist about a nose shape that fits you well, and deciding on the shape after referring to the doctor’s opinion.

Conclusion

Today we talked about a fancy nose and a natural nose.
