Hello, this is Dr. Cha-Young Kang, Chief Surgeon at Nose Lab Clinic.

Today, I’m sharing the case of a patient suffering from nasal deformity, pain, and breathing difficulty caused by silicone implants inserted 40 years ago. Through rib cartilage reconstruction, we restored both functionality and natural aesthetics.

1. Patient’s Surgical History and Symptoms

  • 40 years ago: L-shaped silicone implant

  • 5 years ago: Septal cartilage graft + silicone replacement

  • Complaints: Right-sided nasal obstruction, columella deviation, high radix, pain, and short nose appearance

2. Goals of Rib Cartilage Reconstruction

  • Improve nasal function and airflow

  • Remove old silicone implants causing complications

  • Correct asymmetry and achieve a natural tip with moderate projection

  • Balance facial proportions by lowering the radix

3. Surgical Plan Using Rib Cartilage

a. Functional Enhancements

  • Septoplasty

  • Radiofrequency turbinoplasty

  • Rib cartilage graft to reinforce structure

b. Structural & Aesthetic Refinement

  • Columella realignment

  • Nostril symmetry correction

  • Lowering radix

  • Natural nasolabial angle correction

4. Rib Cartilage Reconstruction Outcomes

5. Expert Insights on Rib Cartilage Reconstruction

This case demonstrates how rib cartilage reconstruction can resolve complications from long-standing silicone implants. By removing all foreign materials and rebuilding the nasal framework, we achieved a stable, functional, and beautiful result.
